Edible

Put your building on the map.

Melbourne's buildings can do more than house us. They can help feed us.

We're mapping buildings across Melbourne that want to transform underused indoor spaces into living, edible infrastructure. Tell us where you want to grow.

For the 2026 Urban Forest Fund, we developed a new model for bringing food production, biodiversity and nature into Melbourne's buildings.

At the centre is a Farmwall growing approximately 90 servings of fresh microgreens each week, surrounded by integrated native planting.

The idea is simple

Turn underused building space into living infrastructure that grows food, supports biodiversity and reconnects people with nature.

Where could this go in your building?

Where could your building
grow food?

You don't need to know exactly what you want to build.

Show us the space and tell us what you would like it to do. Farmwall can help explore what is possible.

Let's put Melbourne's buildings on the map.

One building can grow food.

Hundreds of buildings can change how a city thinks about food.

We're building a map of Melbourne organisations interested in turning parts of their buildings into edible green infrastructure.

  • InterestedThe building has expressed interest.

  • Project submitted / installedA project has progressed to a formal submission or installation.

Map points are illustrative. No contact details are shown publicly, and an expression of interest does not mean a project has received funding.

A city can be green
and productive.

01

Green the city

Bring living green cover into the spaces where people already spend their time.

02

Grow food

Turn greening into something productive, changing and edible.

03

Connect people

Create daily interaction with plants, fresh food and nature.

A Farmwall isn't something people simply look at.

It grows. It changes. It gets harvested. It starts conversations.

Thought leadership

From the edible building
to the edible city.

At the 2026 WELL Summit in Sydney, Farmwall founder Geert Hendrix explored a bigger question:

What if the buildings where we live, work, learn and stay could become part of the food system?

Presented in the fast-paced PechaKucha format — 20 slides, 20 seconds each — the talk explored a vision for moving from isolated growing systems towards buildings, neighbourhoods and ultimately cities that help feed the people within them.

The idea behind forest.farmwall.com is a practical next step in that vision.

We're starting with buildings.

One lobby.
One workplace.
One hotel.
One school.
One apartment building at a time.

The edible city
starts with a building.

We can imagine a city that feeds its people.

Now we need to start putting the buildings that want to be part of it on the map.

A living edible garden
for your building.

The Farmwall

Farmwall is a compact growing system that brings edible plants and fresh produce into everyday urban spaces.

A 12-month project can include

  • Farmwall installation
  • Living edible planting
  • Recurring growing cycles
  • Site-specific plant schedule
  • Simple site plan
  • Scheduled Farmwall maintenance
  • Ongoing crop care
  • Optional community engagement

Expressions of interest for 2027

The 2027 Urban Forest Fund has not been announced. Farmwall is collecting expressions of interest and developing potential projects in preparation for future funding opportunities.

The 2026 Urban Forest Fund application period has closed.

We're now identifying buildings and spaces that could become part of the next generation of edible green infrastructure projects.

Registering your building does not constitute a grant application or guarantee funding.

It gives us the opportunity to understand your site, explore potential concepts and keep you informed about the 2027 Urban Forest Fund and other relevant opportunities as they emerge.

You don't need to
start from a blank page.

  5. 05

    We grow

With or without a grant, your building can start growing food.

Not a one-off activation.

A year of growing food, and spreading it across Melbourne.

Farmwall does the growing for you.

Every week, your Farmwall produces around 90 serves of fresh, superfood microgreens for the people in your building to harvest and enjoy.

But the growing doesn't stop there.

Your Farmwall also acts as a seedling vending machine — giving people edible seedlings to take home and plant on balconies, in backyards, courtyards and community gardens.

One Farmwall feeds your building while helping create hundreds of new places for food to grow across Melbourne.

One Farmwall → building → people → seedlings → homes → Melbourne

What if our buildings
helped feed our city?

Melbourne has thousands of foyers, kitchens, corridors, rooftops, courtyards and common areas.

Most of them produce no food.

Imagine if some of those spaces became productive.

A Farmwall can turn a small part of a building into a place where people grow, harvest and eat fresh food. One Farmwall might produce around 90 servings of microgreens each week.

Multiply that across workplaces, hotels, schools, apartment buildings and community spaces and something much bigger begins to happen.

We start building a distributed edible landscape throughout the city.

One building.
One farm.
One small piece of a more resilient city.

Don't want to wait for funding?

You don't need a grant
to make your building edible.

Farmwall works directly with workplaces, hotels, schools, universities, residential buildings and community organisations.
